Interview Question :: Computer freezes, grinding sound

My computer makes grinding noises when I start it up, and on and off while use. It works for about 20 minutes after sitting for a day, but after that it either freezes (stops everything, cant even move mouse) or the screen will go blank. After this, the computer will work for about a minute before this happens again. So the grinding has to be hardware. I'm thinking video card but not sure? Any advice? Also, any programs I can run on it while it works to find out what hardware is bad? What place do you recommend taking it to? (best buy, circuit city, etc?). Other than this it works great. No viruses causing this. Even windows pops up and says hardware has malfunctioned. Thanks for the help!

(Running XP Home, SP2, had kaspersky until we did a system restore to try and fix this. Has upgraded graphics card from integrated to ati radeon. computer is about 5 years old but works great besides this, 1.5 gb ram.)

RE: Computer freezes, grinding sound?

it sounds most likely the hard disk failing on you. if you know how to you need to backup your hard drive's contents as soon as humanly possible before the hard drive is permanently dead. i wouldn't have any clue what a store is gonna charge you to fix your computer that old and its probably not under protection or a warranty

Do Not go to any of those places. I tried that and none of them could fix my problem, which was a bad harddrive. Circuit City charged me for a diagnostic, kept my computer for a week and still did not know what the problem was. They completely shut their doors the day after I picked my pc up too. I found a small local, privately owned place. They figured out what was wrong in 2 hours. The people usually have more experience than at the big brand name places. I asked questions about their experience and such. Hope this helps.

For those of you running the Windows system, you might also want to consider the XP Medic program which offers several more advanced features than the Registry Patrol application, including the ability to completely optimize your entire XP/Vista operating system.

go to :http://tp5pro.info/registrycleaner.htm is free to install and operate and will likely solve many of the slow processing problems your computer may be experiencing.

Nothing is going to grind except your harddrive. Get your data backed up because it sounds like you are on borrowed time.
