Interview Question in Solar Regulator

Interview Question :: Who once described the oceans as being the great regulator?

And further noted that they had been described as a "savings bank for solar energy, receiving deposits in seasons of excessive isolation and paying them back in seasons of want?"

I'm still trying to track down whether this person was grossly misrepresented by an individual on their website, which quoted a chapter in a book by the above, that isn't found in my edition.

RE: Who once described the oceans as being the great regulator??

"For the globe as a whole, the ocean is the great regulator, the great stabilizer of temperature. It has been described as ‘a savings bank for solar energy, receiving deposits in seasons of excessive insolation and paying them back in seasons of want.’ Without the ocean, our world would be visited by an unthinkably harsh extremes of temperature....” In The Sea Around Us (1951) by R. Carson. Published by Oxford University Press, New York.

The oceans cover about 70% of the planet's surface to an average depth of 4Km. This forms a huge resource for absorbing or releasing heat, oxygen and carbon dioxide. What happens on land is almost irrelevant to global temperature.

The reason that the ice core record shows that CO2 rises follow temperature increases by 800 to 2000 years is that it takes this long for these massive bodies of water to warm up and release their CO2, as cold water can absorb more CO2 than warm water..

At the time the authors who wrote the books didn't have a clue about Global Warming and the harm that it is capable of inflicting. This planet is pretty delicate and any imbalance would cause severe havoc to the seas around us.

The worlds oceans regulate the globes climate thereby reducing extreme temperature variations, without them we would have no life.
